WICHITA, Kan. The Kansas Food Bank has announced a new statewide program to feed poor, elderly state residents with help from Kansas political icon Bob Dole.

Dole, a former U.S. Senate majority leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee, grew up in poverty. He provided a 0,000 matching fund pledge to help distribute boxes of food across Kansas to alleviate “food insecurity” among the elderly, The Wichita Eagle reported.

The goal is to distribute “Bob Boxes” throughout the state at least once a month, within five years. The Food Bank estimates that will cost 4500.6 million, and President Brian Walker said he hopes Dole’s pledge will entice other donors.

Walker said 6.5 percent of Kansas residents over age 50 do not always know where they will get their next meal. Kansas’ poverty rate is 12.4 percent, with nearly 8 percent of the senior population living below the poverty level.

“All too often a senior will not ask for help, and when they finally do, they are embarrassed because they are asking for assistance,” Walker said.

The plan is to provide boxes containing several complete meals, starting with 24 counties in the northwest corner of Kansas by the end of this year. Within five years, the Food Bank hopes to send boxes monthly throughout the state, Walker said.

The boxes will be sent to VFWs, health departments and other locations. Deliveries will take place once a month, but seniors in need will be able to get more than one box.

In prepared remarks for the announcement, Dole wrote that older adults are a proud group.
