Director Ridley Scott was seen boarding a plane from London to Los Angeles after receiving the news his younger brother, Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as “Top Gun,” “Days of Thunder” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” had died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge.

The 68-year-old Scott’s death was being investigated as a suicide as a report emerged on Monday that he may have been battling terminal brain cancer.

However, the director’s family has insisted to investigators the report is false, TMZ reported Monday. The director’s wife reportedly told investigators rumors of her husband having brain cancer are “absolutely false,” and that Scott did not have any other severe medical issues that would have caused him to take his own life.

An autopsy was performed on the British-born director’s body Monday. Coroner’s officials say it will be a month or more before they determine an official cause of death.

Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.

“No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day”

- Ron Howard

A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott’s body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner’s office.

One lane of the eastbound side of the bridge was closed to traffic during the investigation. Cargo vessels moved at reduced speeds through the east side of the port’s main channel during the search, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Investigators found a note in Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on the bridge, according to the Los Angeles Times. That note listed contact information. A suicide note was later found at his office.

Scott’s films shared distinct visual styles with his brother Ridley’s. Ridley Scott mastered the creation of entire worlds with such films as “Gladiator,” “Blade Runner,” “Alien” and this year’s “Prometheus,” Tony Scott was known for hyper-kinetic action and editing on such films as his most recent, the runaway train thriller “Unstoppable,” starring regular collaborator Denzel Washington.

Scott was a thrill-seeker himself in his personal life, an avid rock climber who also liked driving fast cars and motorcycles. Still, filmmaking was his real thrill.

“The biggest edge I live on is directing. That’s the most scary, dangerous thing you can do in your life,” Scott said in an interview for his 1995 naval adventure “Crimson Tide.” “The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies. It’s the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through.”

Tony was the first of the Scott brothers to enjoy blockbuster success with “Top Gun,” starring Tom Cruise, the top-grossing film of 1986 at 6 million. Scott teamed with Cruise again four years later on the hit “Days of Thunder.” He also had a sequel to “Top Gun” in development.

But Ridley Scott later managed more and bigger hits than his brother and earned a level of critical respect never achieved by Tony Scott. “Gladiator” won the best-picture Academy Award for 2000 and earned Ridley Scott one of his three best-director nominations; Tony Scott never was in the running for an Oscar, and critics often slammed his movies for emphasizing style over substance.

Even Scott admitted that it was a challenge to infuse drama into some of his scenarios — for example, cars racing in circles in “Days of Thunder.” In an interview for that 1990 summer hit, Scott was blunt about where some of the ideas came from.

“I went back and I stole from all race movies to date,” Scott said. “I took the better elements, then tried to build on them. Really, the speed, the energy and the placement of the audience inside some of the cars came in the editing room. …

“I’m always pushing for something new and fresh in the way things are shot, and the rest happens in the editing room. … The real speed comes from the cutters and what they do with the celluloid.”

While Ridley Scott had an auspicious start to his film career with 1977′s acclaimed period drama “The Duellists” and 1979′s “Alien,” Tony Scott bombed with his debut, 1983′s supernatural romance “The Hunger,” with David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve.

He vaulted into Hollywood’s top ranks the next time out, with “Top Gun,” followed a year later by “Beverly Hills Cop II,” both with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were working jointly on a film called “Killing Lincoln,” based on the best seller by Bill O’Reilly. Along with countless commercials, their company produced the CBS dramas “NUMB3RS” and “The Good Wife” as well as a 2011 documentary about the Battle of Gettysburg for the History Channel.

Tony Scott said he gained perspective by mixing things up between film, TV and commercials.

“I like changing the pace of my life, changing my discipline. It gives me ideas for how to see the world differently,” Scott said in a 2007 interview.

Besides “Unstoppable,” Scott worked with Washington on four other movies: “Crimson Tide,” “Man on Fire,” Deja Vu” and “The Taking of Pelham 123.”

In a tweet Sunday, director Ron Howard said, “No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day.”

Director Jon Favreau tweeted, “Such sad news about Tony Scott. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

Other Scott films include “True Romance,” written by Quentin Tarantino, “The Fan,” with Robert De Niro, and “Enemy of the State,” starring Will Smith.

Scott was married to actress Donna Scott, who appeared in several of her husband’s films. They have twin sons.

Completed in 1963, the 6,060-foot Vincent Thomas Bridge links rises 185 feet at its highest point above the Los Angeles Harbor. Many have taken their lives by jumping from the span.

The bridge has been used in many Hollywood productions, among them “Charlie’s Angels,” “Gone in 60 Seconds” and “The Fast and the Furious.”

Big hit knocks Vick out of game FOXSports.com

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)

Michael Vick walked slowly off the field, shaken up for the second straight game. And he was eager to get back in the action.

Philadelphia’s star quarterback was leveled on just his sixth play of the Eagles’ 27-17 preseason win over the New England Patriots on Monday night. X-rays on his ribs were negative, but he was held out as a precaution.

”He’s sore,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said. ”He was trying to talk me into going back in, so how sore is sore?”

Vick was knocked down by linebacker Jermaine Cunningham after heaving a long pass in the first quarter. Eleven days earlier, in a 24-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, he had X-rays on his left thumb also negative after hitting it on the helmet of center Jason Kelce. Vick took part in only six plays in that game, too.

”Mike’s tough,” Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said. ”I kind of figured it would be all right, even though he took kind of a big blow.”

On Monday night, Nick Foles replaced Vick and threw two touchdown passes for the second straight game for the Eagles.

”I didn’t give any speech or anything” when he joined his teammates in the huddle, Foles said. ”I was ready to play and they were, too. I could look in their eyes and see the confidence.”

Tom Brady sat out the game for the Patriots. The New England quarterback figures to play Friday night in the team’s third preseason game, at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Other healthy starters, including wide receivers Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, defensive lineman Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo, were held out of the game.

The Eagles (2-0) also have a quick turnaround between games. Vick had been expected to play at least a half on Monday night and possibly rest on Friday night when Philadelphia faces the Cleveland Browns, also the Eagles’ opponent in the regular-season opener.

But his night was cut short, and he left after going 1 for 3 for 5 yards with one run for another 5 yards. After Cunningham drove his helmet into Vick’s left side, the quarterback went down, got up slowly then knelt on one knee. He was checked by medical personnel before going to the sideline under his own power.

”That is just football,” Cunningham said, ”going out there and getting the person with the ball.”

Foles, a rookie third-round draft pick from Arizona, came in and finished 18 for 28 for 217 yards and touchdown passes to Clay Harbor of 1 and 3 yards.

”He did a great job,” McCoy said. ”In the huddle he demanded respect. He put everybody in the right places at the right times.”

McCoy scored on a 1-yard run, and Alex Henery kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 24-17 lead with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. He added a 21-yarder that capped the scoring with 2:00 remaining.

For the Patriots (1-1), third-stringer Ryan Mallett completed 10 of 20 passes for 105 yards, including a 7-yard scoring pass to Alex Silvestro. Brian Hoyer was just 5 for 17 for 55 yards.

”Ryan’s a very confident player, both him and Brian,” wide receiver Deion Branch said, ”but it’s hard for them because they have to play behind Tom Brady.”

Stephen Gostkowski kicked field goals of 51, 35 and 55 yards for the Patriots, who have scored only two preseason touchdowns.

Vick’s departure didn’t change much for the Patriots despite his scrambling ability, defensive end Chandler Jones said.

”It’s the same offensive scheme they’re running,” he said.

Vick wasn’t the only first-stringer knocked out of the game. Philadelphia cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and New England safety Patrick Chung went out in the first half with shoulder injuries. Mike Kafka, Vick’s backup last year, missed the game with a hand injury.

The Patriots led 11-0 after Silvestro’s touchdown 1:16 into the second quarter and a two-point conversion run by Shane Vereen. Then two lost fumbles within a span of six plays led to two Eagles touchdowns.

Rookie Brandon Bolden muffed a punt, and McCoy scored three plays later. On the Patriots’ second play after that, Hoyer fumbled when he was sacked by Phillip Hunt, and Darryl Tapp recovered at the New England 12. Foles hit DeSean Jackson for an 11-yard completion on the next play before connecting with Harbor.

The Eagles took the lead for good, 21-14, with 3:58 gone in the third quarter on Harbor’s second touchdown.

NOTES: A moment of silence was held before the game for Garrett Reid. The son of Philadelphia coach Andy Reid was found dead Aug. 5 in his dorm room at Lehigh University where he was helping the team’s strength and conditioning coach during training camp. … Four Olympic medalists with New England connections were introduced before the game gymnast Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass., swimmer Elizabeth Beisel of Saunderstown, R.I., judo player Kayla Harrison of Marblehead, Mass., and basketball player Maya Moore, who played at the University of Connecticut. … Andy Reid and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins had a brief confrontation on the sideline in the first half. ”He comes at you. He wants to get the best out of you,” Jenkins said. ”Obviously, that’s not the way I should have handled it, but you just get emotional.”

Tony Scott: His Five Essential Movies E! Online

The world has lost a top-gun filmmaker.

The entertainment biz is mourning the shocking death of director Tony Scott, who jumped off the San Pedro Bridge Sunday in an apparent suicide.

The prolific filmmaker, whose directing and producing credits span some of Hollywood’s most memorable blockbusters over the last 30 years, leaves behind an esteemed body of work celebrated for its high-octane energy and adrenaline-pumping kineticism.

Here are five essential films that are part of his indelible legacy as a director.

Top Gun director Tony Scott dead at 68 in apparent suicide

1. Top Gun: The high-flying, jet-fighter action flick literally launched Tom Cruise’s career into the stratosphere and remains Scott’s most popular and beloved movie, ushering in an era of late-’80s testosterone-fueled filmmaking that would set the pace for his body of work. The 1986 film grossed a staggering 3 million worldwide, turned Cruise into the biggest star on the planet, and marked the first of collaborations with überproducer Jerry Bruckheimer. (Scott was reportedly working on a sequel at the time of his death.)

2. Beverly Hills Cop II: Scott took on the unenviable task of helming the highly anticipated follow-up to Eddie Murphy’s 1984 hit, Beverly Hills Cop. The sequel marked his second collaboration Bruckheimer-and his first shot at action comedy-and they struck gold: The 1987 film pulled in almost 0 million worldwide and fulfilled Scott’s dream of working with Murphy.

3: True Romance: A botched drug deal proves to be the catalyst for this gloriously blood-soaked road movie starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette. Although the 1993 film was a box-office disappointment-it grossed a paltry million-it is notable for two things: firing up a heated national conversation over its perceived gratuitous violence, and for its razor-sharp script by an upstart named Quentin Tarantino, who’d go on to release Pulp Fiction the following year.

Celebs mourn Tony Scott’s death on Twitter

4. Crimson Tide: Scott swiped the best elements of Top Gun’s military machismo, jammed it into an armed submarine and took the plunge with leading man Denzel Washington. The result: a 7 million-grossing study in claustrophobia and nuclear-war paranoia. The film also marked the first of five successful collaborations between Scott and Washington, who together would go on to make Man on Fire, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, and Unstoppable.

5: Enemy of the State: Back in 1998, Will Smith was rocketing into superstardom after the back-to-back successes of Independence Day and Men in Black. But it was Scott who tapped Smith’s ability to handle more complex material-and showcase a broader acting range-with this surveillance thriller that played up society’s Big Brother fears amid exponential advances in technology. It remains one of Scott’s better-reviewed films, which The New York Times’ Elvis Mitchell singled out for its “hurtling pace, nonstop intensity and a stylish, appealing performance by Will Smith in his first real starring role.”

Does Steelers’ Wallace report this week? ESPN (blog)

Networks Satellite LLC. in Wichita, Ks. Phone: (316) 269-6900. Your local source for NFL Sunday Ticket and other great programming. Visit Networks Satellite LLC -

Dwayne Bowe ended his holdout on Friday, signing his franchise tender and reporting to the Kansas City Chiefs. Could the other disgruntled wide receiver in the NFL follow suit?
There was increasing buzz among teammates toward the end of the Steelers training camp last week that Mike Wallace would soon return, although no one gave an exact report date. Coming back to the Steelers over the next couple of days makes sense for Wallace. He would have a chance to get acclimated to the new offense and put himself in position to get some snaps in the preseason finale. More importantly, it would give him nearly three weeks to get ready for the Sept. 9 season opener.
Based on Sunday’s night body of work for the Steelers offense, Pittsburgh needs Wallace to come back as soon as possible. Take away the 57-yard touchdown by Antonio Brown, which was the result of a screen pass and not a downfield one, and Ben Roethlisberger’s completions went were for 18, 3, 0, and 3 yards. The Steelers are probably not opening up the playbook for the preseason, but this lack of explosiveness doesn’t inspire confidence during their time without Wallace.

“I look forward to seeing him hopefully sooner rather than later,” offensive coordinator Todd Haley said last week.

When I asked Haley last week how long it would take Wallace to get up to speed with his offense, he said, “Everyone is a little different. A lot of other guys know him better but I am a little familiar with his skill set, and it is pretty impressive. I would think we will just tailor to his skills early on and ease him into it. You want a guy like that involved as much as you can because he is a difference-maker.”

Jamaican woman faces marriage fraud trial in Kan. Huffington Post

Networks Satellite LLC. in Wichita, Ks. Phone: (316) 269-6900. Your local source for Directv and other great programming. Visit Networks Satellite LLC

WICHITA, Kan. A Jamaican woman accused of entering into a “sham marriage” with a Kansas soldier faces a federal trial Tuesday during which jurors must decide whether she wed for love or for immigration purposes in a criminal prosecution.

Prosecutors say Shannakay Hunter was an a illegal immigrant who conspired with Joshua Priest, then a private in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Riley, to enter into marriage so she could get a “green card” and regain her legal status, as well as receive military benefits such as health care for herself and her two children. Priest, 23, in turn received Army housing and subsistence benefits provided to married soldiers. The government contends their May 2010 marriage in Junction City was never consummated and the couple never lived together.

But the defense in its court filings has portrayed the 28-year-old Jamaican immigrant, who lives in Bronx, New York, as a hardworking mother who admittedly overstayed her visa but married for love – and that her husband only made the allegations of fraud out of anger. The defense plans to call as a witness the victim advocate who took care of Hunter after an alleged domestic abuse incident in Junction City involving Priest.

Which portrayal of Hunter prevails – fraud or loving wife – will be determined during a three-day trial that begins Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Wichita. Hunter faces charges of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud and making a false statement to the government. If convicted she faces up to five years in prison on each count, although she would likely get far less, if any, prison time under federal sentencing guidelines. But she would likely be deported.

“I am absolutely mystified by this prosecution,” defense attorney Molly McMurray said in a phone interview. “You know, there are hordes of people coming into this country every day, and for some reason the government is picking on a woman who came here legally who has no criminal record. Now, she did overstay her visa, but she works and she takes care of her two children, who are United States citizens.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson, who is prosecuting the case, in an email said, “We disagree with the lawyer’s statement but we cannot respond to it as to this specific case until after the case has been concluded.”

Priest is expected to be the government’s star witness. He pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and wire fraud in a deal with prosecutors for leniency in exchange for his testimony against his wife. He will be sentenced in October after admitting he got ,000 in military benefits for married soldiers that he was not entitled to receive.

The marriage came to the government’s attention in February 2011 when Hunter returned to Fort Riley from New York to make sure Priest would attend an upcoming immigration hearing in which her change of status was going to be heard. She told Priest’s superiors that he failed to provide support to her since their marriage, as required by Army regulations, and that he needed to be ordered to attend her impending immigration hearing, given his “moral obligation” to do so, according to a court filing.

After his superiors confronted him, Priest told them the marriage was arranged so Hunter could get legal immigration status. His superiors ordered him to attend the immigration hearing but also reported the suspected marriage fraud to an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement fraud hotline and the Army’s Central Investigations Divisions, court documents show.

Hunter’s defense attorney acknowledged that while the couple has always lived apart, she would often come to visit her husband in Kansas.

“She is adamant – and has been the entire time – that she is innocent,” McMurray said. “It is weighing heavily on her.”

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – For the first time in months, the Fairdale
post office is back in action.

The branch shut down in April because of a brown recluse
infestation.

Both employees and customers were thrilled to be back in their
home post office.

Customer Lorne Etherton said, “It’s wonderful. It was such a
hardship driving all the way to Preston.”

Another customer Mike Lyle agreed, “You don’t know how much you
need a local post office until you need to mail something or a money order or
whatever.”

The post office was originally set to be closed for a few weeks,
but it ended up taking four months to completely rid the building of all the venomous
spiders that can cause injury and scarring if bitten.

Brown Recluse Spider Population Booming

Ferguson Pest Control in Wichita, Ks. Call: (316) 616-5845. Find us on Facebook

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Putting on his shorts was the beginning of a traumatic experience for Austin Scott.

“It was probably about 5:45 p.m. on June 4th,” Scott said. “I will never forget the time and day when it happened.”

Nor will he forget the 61 days of frustration that followed that brown recluse spider bite.

Scott documented each day, and the four doctor visits, with a picture on Facebook. The pictures show the bite at all its stages.

Few people have as severe as a reaction as Scott. But this year, more and more people are being bitten and seeing those brown recluse spiders in their home.

“This is one of the worst populations I’ve seen and I’ve been at this for thirty years,” said Michael Patton, President of Patton Termite and Pest Control in Wichita.

Patton says thanks to a mild winter, the brown recluse population didn’t take the hit it normally does.

“We were getting calls in May about the presence of brown recluses throughout homes and normally we don’t get those kinds of calls until August or September,” Patton said.

With the hot and dry weather this summer, Patton says the increase isn’t slowing down.

He says getting rid of a brown recluse problem in your home is not easy because of how the spiders are structured. Most sprays are ineffective.

“They are difficult to kill, they don’t pick up and absorb insecticides in their feet pads like roaches will,” Patton said.

That means you’ll need special insecticides or powders such as diatomaceous earth. But he says a good place to start is placing sticky pad traps in key places in your home.

“It catches them while they are out looking for their prey and it tells you the numbers you have, what direction they are coming from, and the age of population,” Patton said.

That’s just what Scott has done and after his experience he has another suggestion.

“Don’t leave anything on the floor like clothing and, if you do, shake it out,” Scott said. “I do that with everything now.”

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart pass on final ‘Twilight’ conventions as … Zap2it.com (blog)

Networks Satellite LLC. in Wichita, Ks. Phone: (316) 269-6900. Your local source for NFL Sunday Ticket and other great programming. Visit Networks Satellite LLC

In a move that will surprise no one, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have opted out of attending the final four official “Twilight” conventions. The conventions are set for the weekends of August 25 (San Antonio), September 29 (Detroit), October 5 (Parsippany, NJ), and November 3 (Los Angeles). Fans were hoping that at least one of the stars would attend the final convention in November, but Pattinson and Stewart, along with costar Taylor Lautner, have opted out of attending.

“The passion and dedication of Twilight fandom has been amazing and
we’re out to throw one last giant convention, a final gathering to see
old friends that have made up the Twilight family,” Creation Entertainment says. “Although Rob, Kristen and Taylor will not be with us this time out we
will have a super line-up of other Twilight stars and the weekend will
be filled with special events, movie prop and costume displays,
contests, panels, auctions, parties, exclusive merchandise, music and
much more, including some surprises!”

With fans and the media still desperately seeking a conclusive statement from Pattinson about his relationship with Stewart, many are curious as to how the “Breaking Dawn Part 2″ promotional tour will differ from previous years. Normally, in support of the film, the three leads have traveled the globe doing press appearances. This year, things may be dialed back significantly. Luckily, most promotional photoshoots for the film have already been taken care of.

So will the former lovebirds appear together at events? Pattinson certainly knows the fans are clamoring for answers, though he remains as quiet as ever on the subject of his personal life.

“Media culture is a monstrous thing,” Pattinson told the LA Times last week. “You can’t win. The annoying thing is that you can’t attack them, but you
can’t defend yourself. The best thing you could possibly do is punch a
paparazzi and give them their big payday.”

Luckily, he’s kept his fists to himself thus far.
